I was glad to see that Lexington opened a new amphitheater last year.
I was really glad that it was built in close proximity to our house.
It's only about 5 minutes away in the Beaumont Center. I love plays and I hope to watch some at this venue.
We need more stuff like this, instead of tearing down good things for skyscrapers that never get built.
Have you been downtown lately?
Or should I say,what's left of downtown.
There is a big vacant lot in the middle of town where the Center Point fiasco happened and Triangle Park looks like a place one might go to purchase crack.
Oh well, at least we still have the Wildcats! What a game! Go Cats!

I went to Bardstown this weekend (a lovely place) to visit Jennifer's Dad, Ed, and her Stepmom, Rosemary.
From Ed, I learned about the Sandhill Crane.
A beautiful species of bird that Kentuckians are itching to kill.
I guess they're getting bored with hunting down Bambi's mom.
It sounded ridiculous to me so I will support the birds by putting the above banner on my blog.

Ski Trip XI: The Aftermath

I usually like to wait a week before I pass any judgement on the ski trip.
This way, the emotions don't get in the way.
Anyway, some thoughts....

1. The Left, Right Center game was epic Of all the years we've been doing this ski trip thing, I don't think I've ever had more fun. Kara came up with the idea of making it a drinking game, and should be considered for MVP just based on that alone. I mean, combine the fun of an ordinary drinking game with the possibility of winning some cash! Genius!

2. Wobbly Pop= Evil How can something so delicious be so hurtful to a person? I woke up on Saturday morning with the worst hangover I've ever had. Of course, it didn't help matters when I took my first few drinks of the pop without mixing it with Sprite first. (Where was the instruction manual?) So that made me feel really funny, really really quick. It should be called the Devil's Nectar. The next night, I stuck with beer and shots and things went better.

3. The video was good- not great I didn't spend much time on the videa (two weeks) and it showed. It was saved by some really good acting from everybody. So good job, and thanks to everyone who contributed. People laughed at it and even applauded. That's all I care about.

4.When it comes to food, it's time to think outside of the box A lot of discussion on this topic this year. It is believed by many that perhaps we would be better served without really big meals, and I tend to agree. We should buy snacks for all weekend. If you get hungry, fix some food. We can have the Chili cook off on Friday night and then, you're on your own. This would cut down on the mountain of food we usually have on Monday morning. It would also keep some people from having to slave over the oven for hours. The Ski Trip isn't a time to work, it's time to party. Let's get this done.

5.We are changing, and so is the Ski Trip The crazy, three-day parties that were ski trip V and VIII are probably gone. People have kids now. They need to get back on Monday. I get that. But you know what? I'm cool with it. Sure, I would like an extra day with everybody, but it's just not possible sometimes. I'm just thankful that I get two days with everyone.

6. You People are Fun As we were playing the game on Saturday night, several things crossed my mind. One of them was "When did Amy put on that Sombrero?" another was "These people are awesome" At one point, I had Amy and Jess in front of me, Neighbor Dave, Kara and Matt to the right of me, Lil Jen and Brad to the left, and then of course, there was Lisa. What can I say? I feel blessed to have you guys as friends.

7. Was this the best ski trip? Depends. If you judge by the level of craziness, then no. I mean, I was perfectly sober at the Cracker Barrel this time. But if you want to judge by fun, relaxation, and quality time with good friends, then this one has to be in the top three. I had a blast.

It's called Zorbing and apparently, it's big in New Zealand.
Zorbing hasn't exactly taken the U.S. by storm yet, but it looks like the birthplace of American Zorbing is in our beloved Pigeon Forge!
Who knows, maybe if we're not too worse for wear on Saturday afternoon....

In the late summer months of 1997, we had our own version of the Summer of Sam right here in Lexington. Someone had killed a college student and raped another down by the railroad tracks near Rosemont Garden. I remember that it was kinda scary to be outside at night because no one knew who did it and if he was still around. 48 Hours Mystery (one of my favorite shows) is doing a story on the "Railroad Killer" on Saturday Night. Holly Dunn, the woman who survived the attack, is interviewed. My DVR is set. Watch a preview

I was sorry to hear about the passing of "Dandy" Don Meredith earlier this week.
When I was younger, I used to stay up too late on Monday Night watching Monday Night Football, and part of the reason was to listen to Mr. Meredith and Cosell trade insults. He always made me laugh. Another figure from my childhood bites the dust. (sigh) For those of you who hate/don't watch football, you may remember him as the guy who missed the throw at halftime to cost Hank a million dollars in the episode "A Beer Can Named Desire" from King of the Hill. He was good on that, too.

I remember the day we were all sitting around at Bob O Link and someone (can't really remember who) popped in a VHS tape with the worlds Dancing Outlaw scribbled in black magic marker on the side.
We were all fascinated by Jesco, the dude from West Virginia, who idolized Elvis, danced a funny dance, and insisted that his wife better stop a-frying those sloppy slimy eggs.

I was looking for a good film to watch on Netflix the other night, and guess what I found?
A new film about not only Jesco, but his entire family!
The wild thing is, Jesco was actually the least colorful out of the bunch!

The Wild and Wonderful Whites of West Virginia is unwatchable at times, (though I watched the whole damn thing) and infuriating at other times (witness one White do a line of coke in the hospital minutes after giving birth) but all and all, a very worthwhile hour and a half of entertainment.

Working on the north side of Lexington allows me access to many of the interesting food items that the customers eat.
Oh, wait, did I say interesting?
I meant disgusting.

I left out pig ears (i guess not just a dog toy), cow tounge, pig snout, chitterlings (pig intestines) turkey gizzards (more intestinal stuff) and pig feet

Even when I ate meat, I never really liked turkey. I would only eat it occasionally when it was bundled with other meats on a subway club, and of course, Thanksgiving.
It ranked way down the list behind steak, ham, pork chops...
I better stop I feel sick.
When I gave up meat, I did a lot of research on my new vegan life and especially on animal cruelty. Things that I knew were happening but I chose to ignore because I enjoyed the taste of meat.
I learned many, many disturbing things and one thing that really bugged me was "the turkey thing"

Did you know...

Turkeys are bred, drugged, and genetically manipulated to grow as large as possible as quickly as possible to increase profits. In 1970, the average live turkey raised for meat weighed 17 pounds. Today, he or she weighs 28 pounds. According to one industry publication, modern turkeys grow so quickly that if a 7-pound human baby grew at the same rate, the infant would weigh 1,500 pounds at just 18 weeks of age. Turkeys are now so obese that they cannot reproduce naturally; instead, all the turkeys who are born in the United States today on factory farms are conceived through artificial insemination.

Because of us, Turkeys cant have sex!

A plane? Really?

Let me get this straight.
A boy may or may not be trapped in a balloon drifting over the countryside.
It's all over the news.
We learn about the boy (unfortunately named Falcon), his parents, his friends, and his nanny.
We learn the boy's dislikes, his dreams, and his hopes for the future.
The family goes on Larry King Live for an interview.
Oh, and by the way, he wasn't even in the balloon.

But something really newsworthy happens, something that really should be investigated, and it barely makes the front page, and the story comes and goes in almost no time.
A missile was fired by someone off the coast of California.
It's really strange that everyone has dismissed it as being a plane.
A plane? Does this look like a plane to you?

But I always liked it and I think it does a good job of capturing the true spirit of the ski trip.

Anyway, I made this video almost five years ago to the day, and I thought I would share it on my blog instead of letting it collect dust on my hard drive.

Look, I never was a supporter of George W. Bush and he could have handled the Katrina situation a lot better. But I always thought that it was a punk move when Kanye said that Bush hates black people. Poor people maybe, but I really don't think the man hates all black people.

Today is election day.
This year, the "attack ads" have been even worse than usual.
People are even getting stepped on.
I usually vote democratic, so I was going to vote for our male model candidate Jack Conway.
Then he decides to take the low road and run a ridiculous ad about Rand Paul and something about an Aqua Buddha.
Something most people shouldn't give a (bleep) about.
So now, I may just write in my dog, Penny.
She would never run an attack ad against Stuart.
Unless, of course, Stuart was a Republican, then it's on.
Stuart thinks I don't feed him near enough cat food and needs at least one more feeding.
Penny thinks food should be rationed throughout the day, so as to cut back on costs.
Penny is a fascist.
Stuart has a catnip problem.
Penny licks herself in front of guests.
Stuart throws up on the couch.
it could get ugly.

Conway trails in the polls.
It seems as if my state will probably be represented in the senate by a "Tea Party" guy.

The other day I ran in the Race for the Cure 5K.

At about the 2 and a half mile mark, someone comes out from behind the bushes and joins the rest of us.
It looked an awful lot like Jim Gray, Vice Mayor of Lexington and candidate for Mayor of Lexington.
I think that's called "cheating"
I'm almost positive it was him, but I was too busy trying to beat my time from the Midsummer Night's Run.
(I shattered it)

Oh well, get out and vote. At least you'll get that sticker and you will feel superior to the non stickered people.

All the killjoys have said it's just a hearing aid or a crazy old bat talking to herself.
I realize that it would be hard to have a cell phone if there were no cell towers. But if they figured out time travel, wouldn't you think that they would figure out how to use cell phones without cell towers?
I guess there is no way to tell for sure. But damnit, wouldn't it be cool?
I could go back and study more.

I went on essentially a plant-based diet. I live on beans, legumes, vegetables, fruit. I drink a protein supplement every morning—no dairy—I drink almond milk mixed in with fruit and a protein powder so I get the protein for the day when I start the day up. And it changed my whole metabolism and I lost 24 pounds and I got back to basically what I weighed in high school.

But I did it for a different reason, I mean I wanted to lose a little weight but I didn’t dream this would happen. I did it because after I had this stent put in I realized that even though it happens quite often that after you have bypasses, you lose the veins because they’re thinner and weaker than arteries the truth is that it clogged up, which means that the cholesterol was still causing buildup in my vein that was part of my bypass, and thank God I could take the stents. I didn’t want it to happen again.

So I did all his research and I saw that 82 percent of the people since 1986 who have gone on a plant-based, no dairy or meat of any kind, no chicken, turkey—I eat very little fish, once in a while I’ll have a little fish; not often—if you can do it, 82 percent of the people who have done that have begun to heal themselves. Their arterial blockage cleans up, the calcium deposit around their heart breaks up. This movement has been led by a doctor named Caldwell Esselstyn at the Cleveland Clinic, Dean Ornish who you know out in California, the doctors Campbell (father and son) who wrote The China Study, and a handful of others. But we now have 25 years of evidence and I thought that, well, since I needed to lose a little weight for Chelsea’s wedding, I’ll become part of this experiment. I’ll see if I can be one of those that can have a self-clearing mechanism—we’ll see…

Ok, maybe it's just me.
Well, If you are kinda curious, go to Ancestry.com and take the 14 day free trial, research like a madman in those two weeks, then cancel the subscription before the 14 days runs out.
I found out that my great x 8 grandfather built the first courthouse in Prince William County, Virginia.
I found records of my grandfathers in the Revolutionary War and the Civil War.
On a more morbid note, I found an actual copy of my great great great grandfather's death certificate.
Jefferson Deskins almost made it to 88, but fell a couple of months short.
The cause of death was said to be nephritis (kidney infection),
Here is it, in all it's glory.

Here is a list of Revolutionary War soldiers in Kentucky. My great x8 grandfather Daniel Deskins is listed in the top right. A few lines down, A William Divine is listed. Could this be JD's descendant?

For those of you who have been following my blog for a while (I recently passed the five year mark, which will be a future blog entry), you may remember a couple of years ago when I did an entry about the Mormons and how they pissed me off.
What does this have to do with things to do in your free time you ask?

Blogger has added a new tab on their site called "stats" .
Go here and you can find out two interesting things
1) It tells you which site people use to access your blog most commonly.
According to the stats, the most common place to access my blog is "Big Rhonda's World"
Now, I hope this means Jess is looking at my blog but I can't be sure. It may mean people look at her blog first, and then link to mine. Either way is fine. because I like Jess and if she is somehow involved with my blog, I'm honored.
2) This is where the Mormons come in. The second thing that the stats tell you is which individual post has gotten the most pageviews. Well, on my blog, the post with the most hits is the one I did about the Mormons over three years ago! And it's not even close!
If you go here and read the comments, you'll find the Mormons hate me. One even threatened to kick my ass! So much for turning the other cheek!

SCENES FROM A FANTASY DRAFT

On Sept 3, we held our 15th annual fantasy draft.
The first one was held in 1996 and some of the drafters that day included Tracy Joyce and some clown named Dennis .
Dennis and his nutjob wife Nancy were notorious for feeding their kids Dimetapp when they got a little too rowdy.
Ah...the crowd we used to associate ourselves with.
Dennis drafted first that day, and picked John Elway.
Damn, we're old.

After hours and hours of pre-draft prep and careful fine tuning of his team throughout the year, Brad allowed Matt to pretend like he won the title.
The highlight of my week came a few days before, when I told the woman at Hallmark Trophies to engrave the words "Meat Curtains" on the cup.

Here's Jon, trying to figure out how in the hell he is going to deal with the Hellhounds squad this year. Good Luck, Jon.

Here's JD, manager of Los Bastardos. He hasn't had the trophy since we were filming "JD is Thirty"
Will this be the year for him?
Not if the Hellhounds have something to say about it.
I'll ask them and get back to you.

Here's Ben, who came all the way in from the Ville to draft with us.
He calls his team LonMuNu which has something to do with Lon Chaney, (not the werewolf guy) who used to work at Toys R Us with us.
He hasn't won the title since Clinton was president, but he always has the best looking NFL gear at the draft.

Here is Marc and Brett. Marc is the commish of our league and his Sherman Tanks have won the title twice, including the first year. He must be very proud of that one. Congrats, Marc. You beat Tracy, Dennis, Steve Robinson and a bunch of guys who didn't know what the hell they were doing.
Then there is Brett. Fifteen years, no titles.
He's kind of like the Cubs of our league.
Except I hate the Cubs. I kinda like Brett.

Women love fantasy football. These two begged and pleaded to be allowed to attend the draft. Finally they wore me down and I allowed it. Needless to say, they were not disappointed. Jealous Megan?

Before the draft, Amy was giving us some crap about not drafting Drew Brees. We all knew better and she picked him again with her first pick.
Ah... the Harris-Brees love affair continues yet another year. Madden curse be damned!

Caroline sat next to me at the draft and ate all of my chips.
It's weird, I had the sneaking suspicion that she was telling Dave some of my picks....Nah, that little angel wouldn't do that!

I knew it!

My Friend Pink

I was doing good on the blog. Everything was going fine. I was spewing my vegan agenda to the masses every Monday, all the while posting personal material and doing the "Wordless Wednesday" thing every week.
And then something horrible happened.
My friend Pink got sick and died.
I knew that the next entry on my blog needed to be a tribute to him but it was (and still is) very hard to talk about. So I put it off and put if off until now, which as I write this, I am still hesitant because he really was one of my very best friends.
I don't think I could put into words all that he meant to me. But I will give it a try
Pink was unlike any other pet I have ever owned.
He had little strange traits that provided Jennifer and I with at least one laugh every day. That's pretty impressive. If someone can make you laugh once a day without the ability to speak, I think that's doing pretty good. Over the past ten years or so, he was my constant companion, always there when I got home, wanting to be fed, then, after that, taunting his new friend Stuart for a while before finally taking his hours long nap. I miss him very much and I will never forget him. I really want to write more because he deserves a better tribute, but I can't because it really is too hard. So I would only ask that those of you who knew Mr. Pink, take a moment to remember the funny things he did and remember him for the wonderful cat that he was.

What finally convinced me to give up meat for good?

The picture you see above is an example of a typical day in the back of any supermarket on any given day. Pounds upon pounds of chicken, pork, turkey, ham, steak, and every meat you can name.
I took this picture in the back of one of my stores.
Usually it's three of four carts full of wasted meat a day.
Some of it gets thrown out because it has expired. Most of it is the result of people taking it out of the meat section, deciding that they don't want it and sitting it down in the bike, toy, or electronics section, which leads to the meat being thrown out.
One day, I stared down into one of these carts, and decided enough was enough.
As I looked into the cart and saw the dozens of rib roast, pork chops, sausage links, ham hocks, pig feet , and turkey necks (I'm not making that up) I saw the reality.
Every year billions of animals are raised in horrible conditions,pumped full of unnatural chemicals and led to an unhumane death.
For what?
Just to appease our palates.
Some don't even get the decency of being eaten. They end up in a grocery cart like this.
I didn't give up meat that day.
I finally pulled the trigger a few weeks later while vacationing down in Destin.
The wife and I were going to a discount book store and I turned to her and said "I wonder if I could be a vegetarian?" She said " I bet you could!" and I haven't looked back since.

FACT: It takes 78 calories of fossil fuel to produce 1 calorie of beef protein; 35 calories for 1 calorie of pork; 22 calories for 1 calorie of poultry; but just 1 calorie of fossil fuel for 1 calorie of soybean.

Meatless Monday is an international campaign that encourages people to not eat meat on Mondays to improve their health and the health of the planet. Reducing meat consumption by 15% (the equivalent of one day a week) lessens the risk of chronic preventable illness and has a strong positive impact on the environment.
And yes, that was copied straight off of Wikapedia.
Anyway, if giving up meat entirely is out of the question for you, going without it for just one day a week could be an alternative.
So I am throwing the tremendous weight my blog has behind this movement. (I have in excess of at least 5 readers)
Every Monday, I will be blogging about the wonderful Vegan life I have adapted . It may be facts about meat, famous vegans, or who knows what else. It's not often that I read a book that changes my life. Hell, it's not often that I finish a book. Just ask my wife. Look around the house and you will see scores of books that I started and failed to finish. There's Wicked (a very hard read), Duma Key (a great book, but I just stopped reading it for some reason) and Guns, Germs and Steel (very complicated subject matter) and several others. A while ago, I decided to read a book called Eating Animals by Jonathan Safran Foer. I finished it off in a matter of days. This book really took an in depth look at factory farms, slaughterhouses, and the way we treat farm animals in America. The book didn't make me become vegetarian, I already was. It really opened my eyes to how food gets to your plate and how awful that process is. On the last Ski Trip somebody asked me why milk and eggs are bad to eat because after all, no animals are killed. Well, the short answer to that is that they are killed. Let's just say in the egg business, if you are chicken who is born male, its not a pretty sight. Plus there is no retirement village for used up female chickens. And don't get me started on the dairy industry. I understand that everyone will not agree with a vegan diet. But I know everyone will agree that every animal deserves a good life and a humane death. The way it is now, animals do not get that. It is this reason why I have wrung my hands of meat, dairy, and eggs forever. I am proud to be a vegan and I only regret that I didn't do this years and years ago. I just hope Penny, Indy, Holly, Milo, Daisy, Chase, Stuart, Flash, Mr. Pink et al. will forgive me. DERBY DAY WITHOUT THE DERBY

Yesterday was the first time maybe in my life that I didn't watch the derby. I had no interest at all. Remember two years ago when Big Brown won and the second place horse Eight Belles (pictured ) broke her ankles and had to be put down? That really troubled me and has kinda soured me on horse racing as a whole. Sure Keeneland is fun, and it's always a good time but for me, everything changed on that day. I dunno maybe I'm sad because it's been raining so hard that I think I'm going to have to build an ark soon. Maybe it's because we had an open house yesterday and nobody came. (Every time I say that out loud, I start singing Eleanor Rigby) Regardless, it's how I feel today and it's my blog and like JMiIl said, I'm allowed to vent on here. Anyway, remember Eight Belles.

It's Pink as Toothless the Dragon

If you haven't seen one of these new 3D movies yet, do yourself a favor and do it! The wife and I went the other night and saw How to Train your Dragon and it blew us away! It's a little more expensive, but we both thought it was well worth it.
When I was younger, 3D movies usually meant one thing: massive headaches.
I remember watching movies like Friday the 13th part III in 3d and Jaws 3 in 3-D (why was it always the third one?) and coming away disappointed.
Well, these new movies are nothing like that crap.
Gone are the flimsy half red, half blue spectacles you used to get.
In their place, are cool Risky Business-style Ray-Bans that do not cause migraines. Anyway, the movie itself was awesome and Jennifer and I really got a kick out of it because Toothless the Dragon bares a striking resemblance to our Cat, Pink. So we started calling the Dragon Black Pink when ever we see him.

Ya know, it seems like we have a cholesterol problem in this country.

How do I know?

Well, I watch TV.

A lot of TV. I think I've seen every House Hunters and Property Virgins there is to see.

Plus Pawn Stars. I love that show!
Almost every commercial is for drugs to help lower cholesterol.
Well, I guess if you have high cholesterol, you could try Lipitor, Crestor, and the like. But if that's not working for ya, you could try to go vegan. In case you weren't aware, (as I really wasn't until I started paying more attention to my diet) only animal products contain cholesterol. Meat, eggs, cheese, all have it. Veggies ,grains, legumes. etc. contain none of it.
So,if you have a problem, switching to a more plant-based diet may help you out. It's not reallly something I'm hearing out there.
It's just more pill popping.
Anyway, just a thought.

Ok, so we lost. It sucks, But the reality is we were a very, very young team and fortunate to have gotten as far as we got. The important thing is that Kentucky basketball is fun to watch again. (which, to be honest hasn't been that way in a really long time)Even though this group didn't win a championship, I think that they will go down as one of my all-time favorite Kentucky teams. Right up there with the Unforgetables and the Comeback Cats. They gave me many awesome memories and I will definitely miss Wall, Patterson, and especially Cousins. I wish them luck and I will follow them throughout their NBA careers. Congrats on a great season guys. Go Cats!

THE GREAT PACIFIC GARBAGE PATCH

Did you know that there is a giant patch of junk that is currently floating in the Pacific Ocean? I didn't either until my friend Doug told me about it. Apparently, it stretches from the coast of California to almost Japan and is TWICE THE SIZE OF TEXAS! Reaching almost 90 feet deep in parts, it is made mostly of plastic, and its becoming a real problem for the animals that live there. Hmmm.... lets see small fish eats plastic, big fish eat small fish, human eat big fish. Yep, another reason not to eat fish. I'm also recycling now. Always!In addition, I'm breaking down and buying those take home bags at Kroger. It may not be much, but I'm going to try and do my part.This is getting out of control! Don't believe me? It's been almost ten months since I've given up meat.

When that one year mark passes, I will be calling it my "veggiversary".

So, if I embarrass anyone one on Facebook, I apologize in advance.

Anyway, since become a vegetarian, I get a lot of questions concerning my new diet.

Well, I'll give you a report on how I'm doing.

Honestly, I just turned 38 (ugh) and I have never felt better in all my life.

If present day Phil were to travel back in time, McFly style, and confront young Phil, I'm sure that current Phil would have no problem kicking young Phil's ass.

Of course,I wouldn't do that because of that whole time continuum thing, but anyway.

For one, I have more energy. Lots more.

Also, my vision has improved. Probably has alot to do with all the spinach I eat. (That's where Popeye comes in)

I have no guilt that an animal lost it's life to provide me with food.

Other than marrying my wife, this is by far the best decision I have ever made.

I really, really, really, wish I had done this years and years ago.

But again, I don't have a Delorean, so I can only go forward.

Eat more veggies!

I'm probably going to start doing the blog again soon. I've decided that. Soon I will have a camera. We will have a new house. We will have people over. Amy will be a chef soon. I'd like to blog about that. And Iris. And Cooper. And Samantha. Plus Caroline and Kate. The blog will be reborn. Only this time, I think I'm gonna sprinkle important messages into it along with my usual stuff. The other day I got one of my friends at work to try Soy Milk. A real meat and potatoes type guy. He loved it. I was so proud. We went to Kroger and checked our blood pressure. He has hypertension. I told him it probably has a lot to do with the things he eats. I showed him some of the ingredients on his favorite foods. Lots of chlorestoral and sodium. He said "you know, you're right,I eat a lot of crap" Can what I say make a difference? I hope so, but since I've probably lost all my faithful readers I once had on this blog it'll be hard to tell. But I'm still gonna do it. JMIll once mentioned wordless Wednesday. I swear it, I am so sick of Nascar, Golf, and yes, as much as I hate to admit it, baseball.

I used to love baseball.

I never liked it as much as football or college basketball, of course, but I was always a baseball fan.

Nowadays, its really hard to stomach.

The Reds suck every year, all the record books are screwed up because of steroids and ESPN only cares about three teams, the Yankees, the Red Sox, and the Dodgers.

But alas, things are getting ready to look up.

"Eating meat is natural." Really? Is this natural?

After years and years of eating meat, I have finally stopped. I am proud to say that I am a vegetarian.

The hardest part hasn't been giving up meat. That's been really easy. The hardest part has been the shit I've been getting from alot of my friends (not all of them) when I tell them I've given up meat. I mean, its almost like they can't believe it.

Some of them seem almost angry.

Others seem to believe that this is all Jennifer's idea and she is forcing it on me.

Its actually more of the opposite. It was my idea, and she is trying to support me as much as she can. She has agreed to try her best not to eat meat, (she used to be a vegan herself) while continuing to eat fish.

Still other people seem concerned for my well-being.

" Where is your protein coming from?" They say.

"You'll wither away into nothing, I mean, you are already skinny!" They say.

This is something I've always wanted to do.

Why I haven't done it sooner is probably because over the years, I have been brainwashed into thinking I have to have meat to order to survive.

This is complete B.S.

I haven't eaten red meat in nearly 4 months and I have to say that I feel the same as I did before. No change.

In fact, since giving meat up, I have discovered several new foods that I never would have tried before.

Here is a shock.

Veggie burgers are better than regular burgers. They are better for you. They have a lot less fat than beef and they taste better. (thats right i said that) and they take a lot less time to prepare.

Why have I given up meat?

Look, I'm not going to get on my soap box and start preaching but there are a million reasons not to eat meat.

The number one reason is we are herbivores. Not carnivores or even omnivores. We don't have sharp claws or teeth for tearing raw meat and we can't run as fast as most game animals. Our stomachs are not made for digesting meat and neither are our intestines.

Add this to the fact that the way they feed and harvest animals nowadays are not only unnatural but unethical, gives me more than enough reasons to stop eating meat.

I can go on and on but I won't. I'm sure some (or more than likely, all) of the people who read this will disagree, but its how I feel.

Ah but hell, what do I know?I'm just an average guy. These vegetarians are a lot cooler than me. Maybe they will sway you.

PHIL VS. THE DUMB CHRISTIAN

As most of you know, I rarely like to talk about my job. This is because, well, there is not much to talk about. It's steady and it really helps with the ole' mortgage payment.
However, on occasion, things happen at work that I feel obligated to share to the world. Like the time that woman chased me down in her car and yelled at me, claiming I was sent by her ex-husband to "spy on her" (true story)
Well something else kinda bizarre happened like this yesterday.

It was late in the day, I had already worked 10 hours, and I was tired and ready to go home and watch the Final Four.
As I was minding my own business, doing my job,this guy comes up to me and says this:
"Hi how are you doing"?
Now this may sound like nothing, but over the years, I have learned that when a person comes up to me and makes it a point to say hi and speak in the tone this guy did, he or she is not being friendly.
They have a bone to pick with the Pepsi man.
"Oh great, here we go." I thought to myself.
"I was wondering if you could pass a message as far up the Pepsi chain as you can." This dude says.
Now, immediately, I think this is about the "New Formula" that Pepsi has come out with.
Ever since we unveiled our new look on the world . Countless of morons have come up to me and claimed that Pepsi "tastes different" and they wish they would "bring back the old stuff"

Attention all Morons. Repeat after me. New Look. NOT new taste

So I had it in my head what I was gonna say.
"Sir, we haven't changed our formula, only our packaging. It's still the same flavor we have always had" I was going to say.

But then this guy really threw me for a loop.

"Im not happy with Pepsi's position on the gay and lesbian movement"

Wha?...
I'm going through my head thinking "Now is Pepsi for the gays or against them?" I didn't know we had a position.

Then the guy said "I am boycotting all Pepsi products because they support the homosexual lifestyle"

I then noticed his sweatshirt. It had a picture of Jesus with the slogan "Trust in God" or something to that effect.
He had a little girl in his shopping cart. I asssume it was his. I felt sympathy for her.

So I asked him, point blank, ready to get in a "Gays vs. Jesus" debate, "How do we support the gay and lesbian movement, sir"

He seemed shocked that I didn't seem to be "on his side" I think maybe he was looking for a high five.

This is what he said. I'll try to get it as close I can.

"Well, I ...ummm. Pepsi, has over the years... given a million...or umm MILLIONS of dollars... to uh the gays and Uhhh.... "

"Are you talking about Ludicrous? I said. Because I don't think he is gay." I said

"No, I mean....uhhhh..... Family Guy had a ummm....promotion for Sierra Mist and on one of their shows, they said that Christians hate gays and ummm... we don't hate anybody."

I looked at the little blonde girl in the shopping cart again I again felt sorry for her.

"So if you could just pass that along to your boss or whoever, I'd be thankful to you"

"I'm not gonna tell that to anyone. Its silly" I said.

"Well, I'm not gonna buy anymore Pepsi." he said.

"I think we will survive without your business." I said.

"What's your name?" he asked

"Marc Sherman" I said.

So that's what happened. Now I think I'm gonna go watch Family Guy and have a Sierra Mist.

It's hard to believe it is March and UK is not in the tournament. This sucks. I tried to watch an NBA game last night but I almost fell asleep. One of those Days

When I was little I used to have 45s. To you younger readers, a 45 was a record made of vinyl that played single songs on this thing called a "record player" . One of the records I had was Winnie the Pooh (who I found out later in life was actually voiced by Otis the Drunk from the Andy Griffith Show) singing about a Blustery Day. I think it actually means windy. But I always thought of it as more of a depressing nasty day. Today is one of those days and it has put me in a funk. I'm not sure if its because the Cats are in the NIT or what but today I have the blues, and I'm having a hard time shaking them. I'll post a song that always seems to cheer me up. Hopefully it will work.

During this month long blogfest (halfway there), I usually wake up early, post and then be done with it. This morning, I tried to do this but failed because I am still slightly tipsy from the gallon of Kiran Ichaban I drank last night a Nagasaki. Jen and Mike came into town this weekend to visit. They had their own little tour of homes, as they visited the Schandings and the Divines homes before meeting us out for dinner at the Japanese Restaurant. I love Japanese food (well, except for Sushi). Over the years it has probably replaced Pizza as my favorite food. I cleaned my plate and then Jennifer's too. I was going to finish Lauren's as well, but the waiter took her plate away before I could get to it. Here are some photos of the evening.

On the way there, Jennifer and Lauren wanted to take silly photos in the car. That's about as silly as I could get.

When it comes to eating Japanese food, I'm all business. Mike, on the other hand, takes a more light hearted approach. To each his own.

Another highlight of the evening was meeting Tim Masthay, the kicker for UK. He and Jennifer are old friends, and I could tell right away that he is a good, upstanding, young man and I hope he catches on with an NFL team.

Jennifer and I have discovered the joy of Facebook (I know a little late) It is so much better than MySpace, which I lost interest in months ago. We have spent all day taking turns saying the words " I cant believe (fill in name) is on here!" Anyway, since we spent all night on there, I have had no time to think of something to write.
